As you begin to inspect your landscaping after this long winter on Long Island, you may be noticing that your evergreens are looking gold, orange and brown. These are common symptoms of winter burn on evergreen trees and shrubs.

Here are some tips to cure winter burn damage on evergreens:

1. Give your shrubs a selective pruning before applying fertilizer.
2. Apply complete shrub fertilizer in spring and water it well, this will encourage new growth.
3. Wait for the new growth to remerge and then prune out any dead stems that are left.
4. Be sure to water your recovering evergreen regularly.

Depending on the type of tree or shrub, recovery time may vary. To prevent winter burn make sure all evergreens are well watered going into the the fall season. This will go a long way to help prevent another return of winter burn in spring.
