Increase Your Home’s Value and Curb Appeal with Landscaping Upgrades

March 18, 2025 by Anchor Landscape

A well-maintained and thoughtfully designed landscape is one of the most effective ways to increase your home’s value and boost its curb appeal. Whether you’re planning to sell your home soon or simply want to enjoy a more beautiful and functional outdoor space, upgrading your landscaping can offer a significant return on investment (ROI). In fact, studies show that landscaping improvements can increase property value by as much as 15% (Source: National Association of Realtors).

Beyond financial benefits, landscaping enhances your home’s first impression, making it more inviting and aesthetically pleasing. In areas like Long Island, NY, where curb appeal is a key factor in real estate pricing, keeping up with the latest landscaping trends ensures your property stands out.

Why Landscaping Matters for Home Value

The Role of Landscaping in Real Estate Valuation

Real estate professionals emphasize the importance of landscaping in home valuation. The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) suggests that homeowners should invest at least 10% of their home’s value in landscaping to maximize resale potential. A well-landscaped home not only attracts more buyers but also sells faster than a comparable property with minimal outdoor enhancements.

First Impressions and the Psychology of Curb Appeal

First impressions matter, and landscaping is the first thing potential buyers notice. A lush, green lawn, trimmed hedges, and colorful flowers create a welcoming environment, increasing perceived home value. According to Zillow, homes with high curb appeal sell for 7% more on average than similar homes with neglected exteriors.

Case Studies on Property Sales and Landscaping Impact

  • A study by Virginia Tech found that landscaping increases a home’s perceived value by up to 12.7%.
  • A Michigan State University report concluded that quality landscaping can lead to a home selling 5 to 6 weeks faster than one with minimal outdoor appeal.
  • Homeowners in Long Island, NY, who incorporate native plant gardens and sustainable hardscaping see increased property interest due to low-maintenance and eco-friendly features (Source: PLI Builders).

How Landscaping Improves Curb Appeal

The Power of Visual Appeal

Curb appeal plays a crucial role in how a home is perceived. A beautifully designed front yard with a mix of greenery, well-placed flower beds, and structured hardscaping can instantly elevate a property’s appearance. Buyers and visitors form an impression within seconds, and a well-maintained landscape signals that a home is cared for.

Seasonal Landscaping for Year-Round Beauty

To maintain curb appeal throughout the year, homeowners should consider seasonal landscaping. In Long Island, NY, this means:

  • Spring & Summer – Vibrant flowers, fresh mulch, and lush lawns.
  • Fall – Ornamental grasses and colorful foliage.
  • Winter – Evergreens, decorative lighting, and hardscape focal points.

A professional landscaper can help design a layout that ensures your yard remains attractive no matter the season, maximizing visual impact year-round.

Hardscaping Elements that Enhance Aesthetics

Hardscaping—elements like patios, retaining walls, stone walkways, and decorative edging—adds structure and elegance to a landscape. A properly designed walkway leading to the front door creates an inviting entrance, while a well-placed stone patio increases outdoor usability. Investing in professionally designed hardscaping can significantly boost curb appeal while adding long-term functionality.

Financial Benefits of Landscaping Investments

ROI (Return on Investment) for Landscaping Upgrades

Investing in professional landscaping isn’t just about aesthetics—it directly impacts home value. Studies indicate that well-designed landscaping can provide an ROI of 100-200% upon resale (Source: NALP). For comparison:

  • A kitchen remodel typically yields a 60-80% ROI
  • A bathroom renovation averages around 50-70% ROI

Clearly, landscaping is one of the most cost-effective home upgrades.

Professional Design & Installation: Worth the Investment

While DIY landscaping can improve a yard’s look, professional landscape design and installation offer long-term benefits that far outweigh the initial cost. Experts ensure that:

  • The right plants and materials are selected for durability and climate adaptability.
  • Hardscape elements, like patios and retaining walls, are installed correctly to prevent future issues.
  • Irrigation and drainage systems are optimized to reduce water waste and prevent flooding.

Hiring a professional ensures that your landscaping is not only visually appealing but also functional, durable, and environmentally sustainable.

How Much Value Can a Well-Landscaped Home Add?

According to real estate experts, homes with professional landscaping can sell for up to 15% more than comparable properties with minimal landscaping (Source: NAR). In competitive markets like Long Island, a beautifully landscaped yard can make a home stand out and command higher offers.

Essential Landscaping Upgrades for Maximum ROI

Trees, Shrubs, and Plant Selections That Increase Value

Strategically planting trees and shrubs not only enhances curb appeal but also provides practical benefits. Mature trees can increase property value by up to 20% (Source: USDA Forest Service). They offer shade, reduce energy costs, and improve air quality. In Long Island, homeowners favor native species like red maple, oak, and dogwood, which thrive in the local climate and require minimal maintenance.

Well-placed shrubs and perennials, such as boxwoods, hydrangeas, and ornamental grasses, add texture and seasonal color while maintaining a polished look year-round.

Lawn Care and Maintenance Strategies

A lush, green lawn is a major selling point, but maintaining it requires proper care. Key practices include:

  • Regular mowing at the correct height to prevent stress.
  • Aeration to allow nutrients to reach the roots.
  • Fertilization tailored to Long Island’s soil conditions.
  • Weed and pest control to keep the grass healthy.

For those looking to minimize upkeep, drought-resistant turf options and clover lawns are growing trends that offer eco-friendly, low-maintenance alternatives.

Walkways, Driveways, and Patios for a Polished Look

Hardscape features like paver walkways, stone driveways, and flagstone patios create structure and flow in outdoor spaces. Permeable pavers, which allow water to drain naturally, are a sustainable and stylish option gaining popularity in Long Island (Source: PLI Builders).

Adding defined pathways and a clean, well-maintained driveway makes an immediate impact on curb appeal and ensures an inviting entrance to the home.

Smart Irrigation and Water-Efficient Landscaping

Benefits of Eco-Friendly Irrigation Systems

Water-efficient landscaping is becoming a top priority for homeowners, especially in areas like Long Island, where seasonal droughts can occur. Smart irrigation systems help conserve water by using weather data and soil sensors to adjust watering schedules automatically. This reduces waste while ensuring plants receive the right amount of hydration.

Some benefits include:

  • Lower water bills by reducing excess usage.
  • Healthier plants with consistent watering.
  • Minimal maintenance with automated controls.

Drought-Resistant Landscaping Ideas

Xeriscaping—a landscaping method designed to minimize water use—is gaining traction in Long Island. Homeowners are incorporating:

  • Native plants like black-eyed Susans, butterfly weed, and coneflowers that thrive with minimal watering.
  • Mulching to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Decorative gravel and stone elements to reduce the need for high-maintenance grass.

Cost Savings from Water-Efficient Designs

A water-smart landscape can reduce outdoor water use by up to 50%, saving homeowners hundreds of dollars annually (Source: EPA). By incorporating drip irrigation, rainwater collection, and proper soil amendments, Long Island homeowners can create a landscape that’s both beautiful and cost-effective.

  • Provide warmth and ambiance for year-round enjoyment.
  • Create defined gathering areas for friends and family.
  • Boost property value with long-lasting, professionally installed structures.

A professionally designed pergola or patio by Anchor Landscape Inc. can turn any backyard into a dream outdoor oasis that extends your home’s living space.

Outdoor Kitchens and Luxury Garden Additions

An outdoor kitchen is a premium feature that homeowners love. These spaces often include:

  • Built-in grills and pizza ovens for gourmet outdoor dining.
  • Weatherproof countertops and sinks for easy meal prep.
  • Refrigeration and storage for convenience.

Alongside outdoor kitchens, luxury garden features like custom water fountains, koi ponds, and vertical gardens are trending among Long Island homeowners. The Anchor Landscape Inc. team can design a personalized outdoor space that perfectly matches your vision and lifestyle.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Landscaping Trends

Native Plants and Biodiversity Benefits

Sustainability is a growing priority in landscaping, and Long Island homeowners are embracing native plant gardens to promote biodiversity. Native plants:

  • Require less water and maintenance than non-native species.
  • Support local pollinators like bees and butterflies.
  • Reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

By working with Anchor Landscape Inc., you can incorporate eco-friendly plant selections into your landscaping, ensuring a beautiful and sustainable outdoor space.

Pollinator-Friendly Gardens for Environmental Impact

Planting wildflowers, milkweed, and flowering shrubs creates a haven for pollinators while adding color and movement to your yard. Sustainable garden designs also:

  • Improve soil health and erosion control.
  • Attract beneficial insects that naturally reduce pests.
  • Contribute to local conservation efforts in Long Island.

Using Recycled and Sustainable Materials in Landscaping

Hardscaping materials play a big role in sustainable landscaping. Recycled pavers, reclaimed wood, and permeable concrete are eco-friendly options that enhance your yard while reducing environmental impact. These materials:

  • Reduce carbon footprint and landfill waste.
  • Improve drainage and reduce runoff.
  • Provide long-lasting durability for outdoor spaces.

With Anchor Landscape Inc., you can be confident that your landscaping project incorporates high-quality, sustainable materials designed to last.

Low-Maintenance Landscaping for Busy Homeowners

The Benefits of Artificial Turf and Ground Covers

For homeowners who want a beautiful lawn without constant upkeep, artificial turf and ground covers provide an excellent alternative. These options:

  • Eliminate mowing, watering, and fertilizing, reducing maintenance costs.
  • Stay green year-round, no matter the weather.
  • Are pet- and child-friendly, providing a durable play surface.

Anchor Landscape Inc. offers expert artificial turf installation that mimics the look and feel of natural grass, ensuring a lush, green yard with minimal effort.

Automated Irrigation and Smart Landscape Technology

Smart landscaping technology is revolutionizing home gardens, making them more efficient and easier to maintain. Smart irrigation systems adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions and soil moisture, reducing water waste and ensuring plants receive the perfect amount of hydration.

Long Island homeowners are also embracing outdoor lighting automation, which enhances curb appeal and security while minimizing energy use. Anchor Landscape Inc. specializes in integrating these cutting-edge solutions into your landscape design.

Choosing Perennials and Hardy Plants for Effortless Upkeep

Selecting the right plants is key to a low-maintenance landscape. Drought-tolerant perennials and native plants require less watering and upkeep while thriving in Long Island’s climate. Popular choices include:

  • Black-eyed Susans and coneflowers for bright, resilient blooms.
  • Hostas and ferns for shaded areas.
  • Ornamental grasses that add texture and movement with little maintenance.

Let Anchor Landscape Inc. help you design a stunning landscape that requires minimal effort to maintain.

The Role of Professional Landscaping Services

DIY vs. Professional Landscaping: Which Is Best?

While some homeowners attempt DIY landscaping projects, the difference in quality and longevity between DIY and professional work is significant. DIY landscaping often leads to:

  • Improper plant selection that struggles to survive in local soil and climate.
  • Drainage issues that cause water pooling and erosion.
  • Hardscape failures like cracked patios and uneven pathways.

Hiring Anchor Landscape Inc. ensures that your landscaping is expertly designed, installed correctly, and built to last.

What to Expect from a Landscape Designer

A professional landscape designer works closely with homeowners to create a vision that aligns with their style and budget. Anchor Landscape Inc. provides:

  • Custom landscape plans tailored to your property’s layout.
  • High-quality materials for long-term durability.
  • Expert plant selection to ensure year-round beauty.

Whether you’re looking for a complete backyard transformation or subtle enhancements, their team will guide you through the process from design to installation.

Average Costs of Landscaping Services

The cost of landscaping varies based on the size of the project, materials used, and complexity of the design. On average:

  • Basic landscaping upgrades (mulching, lawn care, and minor plant additions) range from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Mid-range projects (walkways, patios, irrigation, and flower beds) typically cost $5,000 to $15,000.
  • High-end landscape transformations (custom hardscaping, outdoor kitchens, and lighting) can exceed $25,000.

While the initial investment might seem significant, professional landscaping can increase property value by up to 15%, making it a smart financial decision.

Anchor Landscape Inc. provides competitive pricing and top-tier craftsmanship, ensuring you get the best value for your investment.

Landscaping Mistakes to Avoid

Common Errors That Lower Home Value

Landscaping can significantly boost property value, but poor design choices can have the opposite effect. Some common mistakes homeowners make include:

  • Neglecting regular maintenance, leading to overgrown or dead plants.
  • Choosing the wrong plants, resulting in excessive water usage or difficult upkeep.
  • Overloading the yard with too many features, creating a cluttered look.
  • Ignoring drainage issues, which can cause water damage to the foundation.

To avoid these pitfalls, work with Anchor Landscape Inc. to create a well-balanced, low-maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing landscape that enhances your home’s curb appeal.

Overgrown vs. Underwhelming Landscaping Issues

Striking the right balance is essential—too many plants can make a yard look jumbled and unkempt, while too few can make it appear bare and uninviting. Professional landscapers understand scale, proportion, and plant selection, ensuring your outdoor space is visually appealing year-round.

The Importance of Balance in Hardscaping and Greenery

A well-designed landscape incorporates both softscape (plants, trees, flowers) and hardscape (patios, walkways, retaining walls) elements. Too much greenery without structure can appear wild, while excessive hardscaping can make the yard feel cold and unwelcoming.

Anchor Landscape Inc. creates custom landscape designs that blend the right mix of greenery and hardscaping, maximizing both beauty and functionality.

How to Plan Your Landscaping Remodel

Setting a Budget and Timeline

Before starting a landscaping project, it’s important to:

  • Define your goals (enhancing curb appeal, increasing functionality, adding value).
  • Establish a budget to determine what features you can afford.
  • Set a realistic timeline—some projects may take a few weeks, while larger renovations can take months.

By working with Anchor Landscape Inc., you’ll receive a detailed project plan, cost estimate, and timeline, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

Creating a Landscape Design That Suits Your Lifestyle

Every homeowner has different needs—some prioritize entertaining spaces, while others focus on low-maintenance gardens. A professional landscape designer helps:

  • Identify functional zones (seating areas, play spaces, gardens).
  • Choose plants and materials that match your lifestyle and maintenance preferences.
  • Incorporate eco-friendly solutions for long-term sustainability.

With Anchor Landscape Inc., you’ll get a customized design plan that enhances your home’s beauty while fitting seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Anchor Landscape Inc. works with homeowners on projects of all sizes, ensuring that every detail contributes to a stunning final result.
